International Day of Women and Girls in Science: Let’s close the gap

February 11, 2020

On this International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we want to express how proud we are of all our Globers who are mentors, coaches, and teachers in the women’s IT ecosystem. We are also extremely proud of women and girls everywhere who seek to develop themselves professionally in the field of technology.

The world of IT is, at a global level, in need of more women. At Globant, we are convinced that only with a plural and diverse work environment can we achieve our maximum potential. This need for plurality includes the need for a greater female presence in the industry.

What we’re doing about it

Our #WomenThatBuild campaign aims to encourage women’s  participation and professional growth in technology. With both external and internal initiatives, we seek to narrow the gap of male-female representation within the IT ecosystem.

Externally, we actively promote the training of women and girls in technological skills. We are currently funding 500 scholarships for our Code Your Future program. The goal of the program is to train new talent in IT, and 80% of these scholarships are aimed at women.

Additionally, our external initiatives include mentorship programs and workshops to promote women’s incorporation into the world of technology. In 2019, we had 3 main programs striving to achieve this goal.

Outward-facing initiatives

In Argentina, we work in partnership with Club de Chicas Programadoras, a program that teaches adolescent girls how to program and inspire their curiosity in technology, without any cost of participation. Globers volunteered as mentors. Every week they donated their time to teach the club’s curricula, either at Globant’s offices or at external sites. Last year we were able to reach more than 250 girls across 8 Argentine provinces.

In Chile and Peru, we offer training in technology to young women seeking to gain IT skills. We partnered with Laboratoria, an NGO whose mission is to promote the development of women in the industry in Latin America. Globers volunteered to give both face-to-face and online workshops, reaching more than 430 women in 2019.

In India, our Empower Her program focuses on young women from underprivileged backgrounds. We provide them with IT training, as well as instilling entrepreneurial and soft skills. Globant volunteers mentor 30 girls between the ages of 16 and 25, four hours a week. We seek to empower them, and prepare them for their eventual entry into the workforce.

With these programs, we strive to bring the IT world closer to women and girls. We aim to empower them and tear down the myth that technology is for men. We still have a long way to go, however, to remove the gender lens in this industry.  That’s why we’re inviting everyone to join us this International Day of Women and Girls in Science to #BeKind, and to promote these efforts and others like it. Together we make a difference.

Diversity, equity and inclusion are key to our business. Technology requires us to innovate constantly, and we can only achieve this if we bring together different points of view. Some of the areas we are working on include focusing on improving gender equality in our industry, inclusive hiring practices, and helping people to achieve a work-life balance.
