Stop Playing with AI Prompts. Sapphire 2026 Is About Execution

May 29, 2026

If you’re sitting in your office right now thinking that your enterprise AI execution is on track because your teams are using generative AI to write emails or draft code, we need to talk.

The major takeaways from SAP Sapphire 2026 in Orlando and Madrid just dropped a massive reality check on the business world: the era of isolated AI experimentation is officially over. We have entered the era of the Autonomous Enterprise, and the gap between the companies that “get it” and those that don’t is about to become a canyon.

The autonomous enterprise marks the way

One of the strongest themes at Sapphire was SAP’s acceleration toward what it now frames as the autonomous enterprise.

At the core of that vision is the evolution of SAP Joule, its generative AI copilot, which is steadily moving beyond answering queries and into executing end-to-end business actions across enterprise systems.

SAP’s direction is increasingly clear: AI is becoming part of the operating layer of enterprise software. A key enabler of this shift is SAP Business Technology Platform, which continues to serve as the foundation for data, integration, and AI orchestration across SAP landscapes.

The ambition is bold: hundreds of domain-specific AI agents embedded across finance, supply chain, procurement, and HR as active participants in business processes.

The real story is not AI but the ecosystem behind it

Another major signal from both Orlando and Madrid is that enterprise AI is becoming an ecosystem. SAP is building a deeply interconnected network of data, applications, and partners that power its AI layer.

That ecosystem includes strategic alignment with Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, NVIDIA, and Databricks, all of which play a critical role in providing the compute, data infrastructure, and scalability needed for enterprise-grade AI.

On the data and process side, SAP’s recent moves, including acquisitions like LeanIX and Signavio, and the completed acquisition of Reltio, reinforce a clear strategy: you cannot operationalize AI without first understanding how the business actually runs.

Because AI without structured data and process intelligence doesn’t scale, it just guesses faster.

The real reason why AI doesn’t replace humans in enterprise

One of the strongest undercurrents at Sapphire was also one of the most important corrections to current AI narratives: AI is not replacing humans in enterprise systems.

Instead, SAP and its ecosystem are pushing a human-in-the-loop model. And there’s a simple reason for that: enterprise systems don’t tolerate uncertainty.

AI agents can automate repetitive and structured tasks, but humans remain essential for validation, governance, escalation, and final decision-making.

Not because AI isn’t capable, but because the cost of getting it wrong in finance, logistics, or HR is too high. So the model is evolving into something more realistic: AI accelerates execution. Humans ensure accountability.

“When you look at the SAP life cycle, traditionally known as the Activate methodology, it is highly sequential and relies on manual processes that require significant human effort. By understanding and mapping this full lifecycle, you can unlock major efficiencies and significantly reduce timelines and effort. Humans remain in the loop, but their role shifts from doing manual execution to focusing more on review, validation, and governance.”

Rick Natividad, Senior Managing Director & Senior Vice President – Enterprise Platforms at Globant

“Agentifying” the SAP Lifecycle

Another disruptive operational concept debated at Sapphire was the opportunity to “agentify” the SAP delivery lifecycle itself. Traditional methodologies, including SAP Activate, still lean heavily on manual coordination, sequential testing protocols, and massive human effort.

By embedding AI agents across every phase, from Discovery and Design to Development, Automated Testing, Handover, and Go-Live, organizations can fundamentally compress project timelines.

Real-World Enterprise Execution Is Already Happening

What made Sapphire 2026 especially interesting is that the conversation moved beyond theory. Real companies are already operationalizing these models.

One example discussed during the event was Aeropuertos Argentina, which showcased its SNOW (Smart Network Operating Winter) initiative built on SAP technologies. The system autonomously coordinates weather data, runway sensors, and operational workflows, helping reduce operational costs and emissions across airport operations.

Meanwhile, Levi Strauss & Co. highlighted how modernized enterprise architectures are helping manage complexity across thousands of stores and distribution points while improving operational efficiency and fulfillment processes globally.

As Rick Natividad shared during his presentation at the event, Globant also showcased a success story delivered through AI Pods, illustrating how AI is transforming enterprise finance at scale.

A global jeanswear leader moved from reactive processes and intuition-based decisions to an AI-powered treasury model. The solution consolidated all financial transactions into a 26-week cash flow forecast integrated across SAP S/4. On top of this foundation, an AI agent layer (including Joule, finance agents, analytics agents, and ML copilots) enabled real-time analysis and a 360° view of liquidity and cash flows.

The result: 8x improvement in forecasting accuracy and a 99% reduction in reporting time, shifting from reactive reporting to proactive strategic decision-making.
