The rise of conversational interfaces

May 13, 2020

While many of us are accustomed to the term User Interface, or UI, Conversational User Interface (CUI) may not be something we readily relate to. A CUI is a type of User Interface that allows users to interact with computer systems through the use of language, be it in the form of voice or text.

Our whole life is ruled by interactions and now, more than ever, we realize how most of these are human interactions. But in times of crises, we need to adapt and adapt quickly.

Technology has always been there to help with these situations, not only in terms of computer technology, but also as a knowledge employed to solve problems.

Following this concept, we can consider language itself as a technology; it solves communication problems, helps individuals connect and communicate, and now it can do the same between man and machine.

Far from the memories of HAL 9000 in 2001: A Space Odyssey or MOTHER in Alien, we are now in fact able to connect with computer systems by using our own native language. There´s no interface, nothing to learn, just plain old human language. This is what we call Conversational Interfaces.

But how does speaking to a machine help us during these times?

Conversational interfaces can help with many of our daily interactions when applied properly.

From automating help desk tasks to triaging for virus symptoms, conversational interfaces can be expanded to new horizons like retailing, media, the food industry, and even when we go back to “real world” tourism.

It’s been said before “the new UI is no UI”. Using conversational interfaces like chatbots or home assistants can help with social distancing by allowing anyone with access to smart devices to interact with business services. It does not require any downloads, there’s no learning curve since language is universal, and there is no physical interaction.

How can conversational technology help you and your business? Stay tuned for more follow up stories and to learn how CUI can help your company.
