Last December, we finished two new editions of the Design Center: La Plata (LP) and Buenos Aires (BA), in Argentina.
The Design Center is our initiative to bridge the gap between what the university is teaching and what the market is expecting. We select 15 people from multiple backgrounds each for each round (from hundreds of candidates). We go through four months of intensive training of the design process in a “real-life” environment.
It is a great initiative to give back to the community. It is really wonderful to teach others what you know, and in the process you learn, formalize and really close the circle of knowledge.
In retrospect at the end of the session, we learned that recognition and appreciation didn’t come through technical skills, or through expertise, that it was only mentioned three or four times. Every other time (like 56 other times) the attribute that made an impression was the ability to collaborate, to be generous, to take the time to focus on someone else, to be energetic and bring food to share, to be friendly and make time to just have a drink with each other, to mediate when there was a conflict. Those things where the skills and actions that made an impact in the process.
Considering the results, Maya Angelou was right when she said:
“I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
Being aware of this in your professional life is very powerful. You should learn new techniques, and be very good at your craft, but at the end of the day, what will make a difference, what will open doors for you and will let you have a more fulfilling and purposeful life is how you treat others and how you let yourself be treated.
It really takes a village to run the design center, is not possible to do it alone, so we wanted to take the opportunity to say thank you to the wonderful professionals that give back and make this possible.
